Email slicing explained

What is an email slicer?

In email production, an email slicer turns a finished, approved design into the pieces an email service provider actually needs: images, sections, columns, links and alt text. The name comes from the most basic version of the job — cutting a tall flat design into shorter image strips — but that's the floor, not the ceiling, of what one can do.

Why the job exists at all

A design usually gets signed off as one flat image before it becomes production email blocks. Someone then has to turn that visual into sections, decide what stays a real link versus a static image, write alt text for every piece, and produce something that survives Outlook's rendering quirks and a phone screen. Slicing by hand in an image editor works, but it's the same manual translation step every single campaign.

Basic slicing vs. a reviewed production pass

Cutting a design into image strips and uploading them is basic slicing — fast, but everything downstream (links, alt text, mobile behaviour, what stays editable) is still manual. A more complete pass proposes the section structure automatically, lets a person correct it, and produces a template with real content where that helps rather than locking everything as an image. Email Slicer is built as the second kind: an automatic first pass, reviewed by you, before anything reaches Klaviyo.

"Email slicer" means different things depending on where you find it

  • Email design slicer — turns an approved email design into production sections and assets for an ESP. This is what this page, and this product, are about.
  • Python "email slicer" — a common beginner exercise that splits an email address string into its username and domain. Unrelated to email design production.
  • Email parser — extracts structured data from incoming email messages or attachments, not from a design file.

What a modern email slicer should handle

  • A flat, approved design as the starting point — no proprietary handoff format required.
  • Section and column structure, not just horizontal image boundaries.
  • A choice between editable text and image slices, not an all-or-nothing default.
  • Links and alt text reviewed per section, not generated silently.
  • Desktop and mobile handling that renders correctly without custom code.
  • A human review step before anything reaches the destination account.
